Pininfarina's defining mid-engined V8 Ferrari — the car that took Maranello mainstream.

Overview

Why this car matters

Launched at the 1975 Paris Salon, the 308 GTB replaced the Dino 308 GT4 with a Pininfarina-styled mid-engined coupe powered by a 3.0-litre V8. Early cars used a glass-fibre body; production switched to steel in 1977. The targa-topped GTS arrived in 1977, the four-valve 308 Quattrovalvole in 1982, and the bored-out 328 GTB/GTS — visually facelifted with body-coloured bumpers — ran from 1985 to 1989.

It is the longest-lived V8 Ferrari shape of its era and underpinned the brand's global awareness through television (Magnum P.I.) and the supercar boom of the 1980s.

The 308/328 family is Ferrari's most important volume V8 of the 1970s and 1980s, and the entry point into serious analogue Ferrari ownership.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Ferrari 308 & 328, the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Original paint, matching numbers, documented Ferrari Classiche eligibility (where applicable) and continuous service history.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The Tipo F106 V8 is durable when maintained; cambelt service every 3–5 years is non-negotiable. Pre-1982 carburettor cars demand careful set-up; QV and 328 cars run fuel injection. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Vetroresina (glass-fibre) early 308s, carburettor 308 GTB and 328 GTS in original colours lead. Quattrovalvole cars are the long-distance choice. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,000–4,000 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$5,000 – $18,000
Fuel economy
15–28 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Use Ferrari-experienced specialists for cambelt, fuel injection and electrical work; non-specialist shops routinely miss correct procedure. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

After a steep run-up in 2014–18 the 308/328 market consolidated. Vetroresina cars and concours 328 GTS examples now lead; tired carburettor cars and rough QVs have softened materially as restoration costs catch up with values.

Long-term outlook

StableHorizon: 5–10 years

A mature blue-collar Ferrari market. Vetroresina and best-of-breed 328 GTS cars should hold; mid-grade examples will track inflation rather than appreciate.
