Why this car matters

Launched in Japan as the Fairlady Z in 1989 and globally as the 300ZX, the Z32 used a 3.0-litre twin-turbo VG30DETT V6 producing 300 PS in JDM specification and 300 bhp in North American specification, paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The car featured Super HICAS rear-wheel steering, all-aluminium suspension links and electronically adjustable dampers, all advanced for 1989.

Production continued in Japan until 2000, with overseas markets generally ending in 1996.

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo (Z32), the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Twin-turbo manual coupe (T-bar), original wheels, unmodified mechanicals and continuous service history.

Mechanical inspection priorities

VG30DETT is robust but coil packs, fuel injectors, turbocharger oil supply and exhaust manifold studs are well-known service items. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.
