Alejandro de Tomaso's Modena operation gave the world the definitive Italian-American hybrid: the Pantera, a Ghia-styled mid-engined wedge with Ford V8 muscle, sold through Lincoln-Mercury showrooms and built across two decades in around 7,000 examples. Before it came the exquisite Vallelunga and the Giugiaro-bodied Mangusta, both now serious collector cars. The marque has been revived under new ownership with the P72, a coachbuilt homage to its 1960s sports-racers — while Panteras, long the affordable Italian exotic, have been climbing steadily out of that category.
