Rolls-Royce

3 guides · 1906–2017

Rolls-Royce set out in 1904 to build simply the best car in the world, and the Silver Ghost's legendary reliability runs made the claim stick — 'the best car in the world' became less a slogan than a settled description. The Phantoms carried the standard through the coachbuilt era, the Silver Cloud and Silver Shadow defined postwar luxury, and the marque's engineering seriousness extended to powering Spitfires with the Merlin. Under BMW stewardship since 2003, Goodwood-built Phantoms, Cullinans and the electric Spectre sustain the standard, while Ghosts, Clouds and coachbuilt Phantoms anchor a collector market where provenance — royal, celebrated or merely fastidious — counts double.
