Designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia and produced from 1971 by Alejandro de Tomaso's Modena facility, the Pantera combined Italian mid-engined supercar packaging with a Ford 351 Cleveland V8 producing 330 bhp in original form. Sales in North America were handled through Lincoln-Mercury dealers from 1971–1974, with European sales continuing through the GT5 and GT5-S body kits and the final Pantera 90 Si into 1992.
Mechanical specification evolved across two decades — early cars used the Cleveland 351, later European cars used the Ford 351 (Australian-built) and the final Pantera 90 Si used Ford's 5.0-litre 'Windsor' V8 with Marelli engine management.
The first Italian supercar in volume that was specifically engineered to take a North American V8; widely seen as a value-entry into the mid-engined supercar set.
