Why this car matters

Launched in February 1984 with a 1.6-litre 105 PS engine, the Peugeot 205 GTi gained a 115 PS version in 1986 and a 1.9-litre 130 PS variant the same year. The car was praised at launch for its chassis balance, light weight (under 900 kg) and steering, and remains the defining 1980s European hot hatch.

Production continued until 1994 with various special editions (Gentry, Limited Edition) closing out the run.

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Peugeot 205 GTi, the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. 1.9 GTi in lead colours (Cherry Red, Miami Blue), original Speedline wheels and full documentation.

Mechanical inspection priorities

1.6 and 1.9 XU engines are robust; check timing belt history, head-gasket condition and original carburettor / injection set-up. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Original paint, original wheels, full service history and unmodified mechanicals. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.
