Honda S2000

Honda's 9,000 rpm roadster: light, precise and increasingly prized in original condition.

Honda S2000
Overview

Why this car matters

The S2000 distilled Honda's engineering confidence into a compact rear-drive roadster with a high-revving VTEC engine, close manual gearbox and exceptional chassis balance. Early AP1 cars are more frenetic; later AP2 cars are more settled and torquey.

Original examples are now strongly collectible because many were modified or used hard when inexpensive.

The S2000 is one of the purest modern Japanese sports cars and one of the last naturally aspirated high-revving Hondas built at scale.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Honda S2000, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching chassis and engine details where applicable, original manuals, invoices and evidence that major service work has been carried out by recognised specialists. Original paint, stock suspension, unmodified airbox/exhaust, low owners and factory hardtop add value.

Mechanical inspection priorities

F20C/F22C engines are durable if oil level is maintained; over-revs, timing-chain tensioners and worn synchros need attention. A proper pre-purchase inspection should include cold start behaviour, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, diagnostic scans on modern cars, underbody photography, suspension pick-up point checks, brake condition and a road test long enough to reveal heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance is usually more expensive than buying the better car.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist who knows the model's factory seams. Collector value is heavily affected by structural repairs, poor paintwork, corrosion, incorrect panels and missing factory trim. Cosmetic restoration can be acceptable when documented; hidden accident repair should be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Low-mileage, stock AP1 and final-edition AP2 cars are the strongest buys; modifications should be reversible and documented. Specification, colour, transmission and limited-production variants can move values dramatically. Buy the best-documented car in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will require years of corrective work.

Annual running cost
$3,500 – $10,000
Fuel economy

Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photographs and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location and declared value.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres date out, batteries fail and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Honda specialists know the gearbox, geometry and VTEC oil-pressure requirements that general shops may miss. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific trim, suspension, electronics and engine components. A cheap car waiting on unobtainable parts is rarely cheap in collector-car ownership.

The S2000 market increasingly pays for originality. Club Racer, Type S and delivery-mileage cars sit far above ordinary drivers, while modified cars remain condition-led.
