The original Range Rover, and the car that effectively invented the luxury 4x4. Conceived by Spen King, Gordon Bashford and David Bache and developed under the 'Velar' disguise, it broke new ground by combining a Rover V8, long-travel coil suspension, permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel disc brakes in a clean, upright aluminium body — a machine as happy crossing a field as cruising a motorway.
Launched in 1970 as a two-door only, it moved steadily upmarket through the 1970s and 80s, gaining a four-door body in 1981 and ever-plusher trim. Some 326,070 were built across a remarkable 26-year run to 1996.
