The original Land Rover, and the vehicle that founded one of the most enduring names in motoring. Launched by the Rover Company at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show as a cheap, rugged farm and light-industrial 4x4, it used a lightweight aluminium-alloy body over a steel box-section chassis — a formula so successful that within a couple of years it was outselling Rover's own saloons.
At launch it rode an 80-inch wheelbase with a 1.6-litre petrol four and, on the earliest cars, constant four-wheel drive through a freewheel device. Over its decade in production the Series I grew into a family of longer 86/88-inch and 107/109-inch models, gained a 2.0-litre petrol engine and, from 1957, a diesel option.
