Why this car matters

Launched in 2010 after a decade of development, the LFA used a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque manufactured in-house at Toyota's Motomachi plant and a 4.8-litre naturally-aspirated V10 (engine code 1LR-GUE) co-developed with Yamaha. Output was 552 bhp at 8,700 rpm with a 9,000 rpm redline; the V10 was deliberately tuned for instrument-grade response, with a tachometer redrawn digitally because no analogue needle could keep up.

Production was capped at 500 units worldwide between December 2010 and December 2012; the final 50 cars were the LFA Nürburgring Package with revised aero, retuned suspension and 562 bhp.

Defining Japanese supercar of the 2010s and one of the last great naturally-aspirated V10 production cars — already firmly in collector territory.

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Lexus LFA, the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Verified delivery mileage, Nürburgring Package, original colour combinations, complete delivery file (Lexus delivery box, books, tools).

Mechanical inspection priorities

1LR-GUE V10 is robust but service is Lexus dealer-only with specialised tooling. Verify ECU history and any evidence of clutch replacement (early ASG clutches wear with hard use). A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Original paint, original interior trim, full Lexus dealer history and the cars retained by collectors rather than traded repeatedly. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Lexus dealer support remains in place worldwide but parts are highly model-specific; treat as a factory-supported but irreplaceable car. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.
