Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX

The final 4G63 Evo: rally-bred, mechanical and increasingly collectible in unmodified form.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
Overview

Why this car matters

The Evo IX represents the last and most developed 4G63-powered Lancer Evolution, with MIVEC variable valve timing, active centre differential and the hard-edged feel that made the series famous.

Because so many were tuned, tracked or corroded, collector attention now focuses on standard MR, RS and low-mileage market-specific cars.

It is the closing chapter of Mitsubishi's classic rally-bred turbo saloon era and a key Japanese performance collectible.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching chassis and engine details where applicable, original manuals, invoices and evidence that major service work has been carried out by recognised specialists. Factory paint, no rust, original turbo/ECU, manual gearbox, service history and limited editions drive value.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The 4G63 is tough but tuning quality, oil changes, timing belt history and AYC/ACD health matter hugely. A proper pre-purchase inspection should include cold start behaviour, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, diagnostic scans on modern cars, underbody photography, suspension pick-up point checks, brake condition and a road test long enough to reveal heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance is usually more expensive than buying the better car.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist who knows the model's factory seams. Collector value is heavily affected by structural repairs, poor paintwork, corrosion, incorrect panels and missing factory trim. Cosmetic restoration can be acceptable when documented; hidden accident repair should be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Original MR and RS cars with rust-free shells and stock drivetrains are the priority. Specification, colour, transmission and limited-production variants can move values dramatically. Buy the best-documented car in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will require years of corrective work.

12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$3,500 – $10,000
Fuel economy

Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photographs and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location and declared value.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres date out, batteries fail and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Evo specialists understand AYC pumps, chassis corrosion and tuning evidence. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific trim, suspension, electronics and engine components. A cheap car waiting on unobtainable parts is rarely cheap in collector-car ownership.

Evo IX values track originality and corrosion condition above all else. The market increasingly distinguishes preserved cars from modified performance bargains.

Long-term outlook

EmergingHorizon: 5–10 years

The Evo IX is the collector pick of the later 4G63 cars. Stock, rust-free examples should remain scarce and desirable.
