Developed by Saleen and Ray Mallock Ltd. and launched in 2000, the S7 was the first American mid-engined production car capable of exceeding 200 mph. Power came from a Saleen-developed 7.0-litre all-aluminium pushrod V8 derived from the Ford 351 Windsor, producing 550 bhp in original naturally-aspirated form and 750 bhp in the 2005-on Twin Turbo specification. The carbon-fibre body sits on a tubular steel space-frame chassis with honeycomb composite floor, and the cabin features asymmetric (offset-driver) seating.
Production was small and largely hand-built at Saleen's facility in Irvine, California. Estimates of total output sit at around 90 cars across all variants — naturally-aspirated, Twin Turbo, S7R race car derivatives and the final Competition / LM edition cars.
Defining American hypercar of the era; the only domestic competitor to McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo and Carrera GT, and the rarest of the set.
