MG MGB GT V8

Factory Rover 3.5 V8 in the Pininfarina-influenced GT bodyshell — chrome-bumper cars lead the market.

Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in August 1973; the Rover 3.5-litre all-alloy V8 (137 bhp per published market references) in the Pininfarina-influenced GT bodyshell only — no factory roadster. The alloy V8 weighed virtually the same as the four-cylinder B-Series, preserving the car's balance.

Four-speed manual with Laycock overdrive standard, Salisbury 3.07:1 axle, Dunlop composite alloy wheels; the concept was proven by engineer Ken Costello's private V8 conversions before BL sanctioned the factory car. Killed by the fuel crisis and dropped in 1976.

Factory V8 status and the chrome-bumper cars lead the market. A closed, small factory production run within the MGB family.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Chassis and engine authentication

Authenticate stamped chassis and engine numbers against factory or club records. For the MGB GT V8 specifically, confirm factory-V8 identity against MGOC records — verify body number and engine identity as an original factory car, not a Costello or later private V8 conversion. Chrome-bumper cars (to September 1974) lead the market.

Body and originality

Confirm body originality, panel identity and restoration standard against a marque specialist.

Mechanical inspection and service history

Confirm continuous service history and any rebuild history for the engine, transmission and driveline against a marque specialist.

Provenance and ownership history

Restoration standard, originality of body and driveline, and any documented ownership record are the main value drivers.
