Overview

Why this car matters

Rover Group's revival of the MGB bodyshell after a 12-year hiatus, launched 1992 and built at Cowley to 1995; heavily modified panels with under 5 per cent parts interchangeability with the original MGB.

Fuel-injected 3.9-litre Rover V8, 190 bhp at 4,750 rpm, with a limited-slip differential; leaf-sprung rear retained; luxury cabin with veneered burr elm and Connolly leather. A limited run of approximately 2,000 cars, sold only in the UK and Japan, with the majority going to Japan; succeeded by the MGF.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Chassis and engine authentication

Authenticate stamped chassis and engine numbers against factory or club records. For the RV8 specifically, verify UK vs Japan delivery-market history — UK-delivered cars carry a premium — and confirm originality of the burr-elm and Connolly leather cabin against MGOC records.

Body and originality

Confirm body originality, panel identity and restoration standard against a marque specialist.

Mechanical inspection and service history

Confirm continuous service history and any rebuild history for the engine, transmission and driveline against a marque specialist.

Provenance and ownership history

Restoration standard, originality of body and driveline, and any documented ownership record are the main value drivers.
