Pagani Zonda R

Pagani's uncompromised track weapon — a different car under the Zonda skin.

Overview

Why this car matters

The Zonda R, launched in 2009 alongside the Cinque, is Pagani's dedicated track car. It is not road-legal and shares only around ten per cent of its components with the road-going Zonda F. Its powerplant is not the 7.3-litre AMG road V12 but the 6.0-litre Mercedes-AMG 'GT112' V12 developed for the CLK-GTR race car, rated at 750 PS / 739 hp with 710 Nm and driving the rear wheels through a six-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox at a dry weight of around 1,070 kg.

In 2010 the Zonda R set a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap of 6:47 — for a period the fastest lap ever recorded by a production-derived car. The related Zonda Revolución (five units) and R Evolution derivatives are separate cars and are not folded into the Zonda R production count.

The Zonda R is Pagani's uncompromised track statement — a different car under the Zonda skin, with a race-derived V12 architecture that no road Zonda ever received. Fifteen built, no road use, and a defining Nürburgring lap: a permanent fixture of hypercar history.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. The strongest cars carry continuous factory or Pagani-authorised service history, all original books and tools, delivery documentation and — where relevant — build sheets confirming factory options and personalisation. For the Zonda R, factory-supported ownership with a Pagani-authorised specialist is effectively mandatory. Confirm original factory build sheet, complete track-use documentation, and any Evolution upgrade history.

Mechanical inspection priorities

Inspection should be led by a Pagani-authorised specialist. Verify AMG V12 health with compression and leak-down figures, gearbox behaviour (manual on early Zondas, automated sequential on Cinque / BC), suspension geometry, brake condition (carbon-ceramic thickness and disc integrity) and full electronics diagnostics.

Carbo-titanium / carbon-fibre integrity

Pagani's structural carbon-fibre and carbo-titanium panels are extremely expensive to correct if damaged. Confirm chassis and panel integrity via lift inspection and, where possible, factory review. Any accident history requires factory-signed repair documentation to preserve value.

Specification and personalisation

Every Pagani is heavily personalised. Colour, exposed-carbon finish, trim, wheel finish and factory options move values meaningfully — but the underlying provenance and originality of the personalisation is what protects the value long-term.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
500–3,000 miles typical for private collection use
Service interval
12 months regardless of mileage; factory or Pagani-authorised specialist only
Annual running cost
$15,000 – $60,000+ depending on use, specification and service events
Fuel economy
10–14 mpg typical for AMG V12-engined cars
Insurance
Use an agreed-value hypercar policy with limited mileage, secure climate-controlled storage, documented photography and an annual value review.

Factory access

All Zonda and Huayra derivatives should be maintained and, where possible, serviced through Pagani directly or through a Pagani-authorised centre. Bespoke construction, carbo-titanium panels and low absolute part volumes make specialist involvement essential.

AMG V12 servicing

The Mercedes-AMG V12 is a specialist unit in its own right — plan the ownership around a factory or authorised specialist relationship rather than around a generalist supercar workshop.
Common Problems

Known issues by system

Engine (AMG V12)

Deferred maintenance and specialist rebuild access

Major$20,000 – $150,000+ depending on scope

Inspection — Pagani-authorised lift inspection; confirm any prior repair documentation.
Electronics

Bespoke ECU / instrumentation faults

Moderate$2,000 – $15,000
Symptoms — Warning lights, intermittent instrumentation, comms faults.
