Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in 2015 as the first of McLaren's Sports Series, the 570S used a carbon-fibre MonoCell II tub, a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 562 bhp (570 PS) and a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle. It was conceived as a more usable, less aggressive supercar than the 650S, with softer suspension, more luggage space and adaptive damping tuned for road compliance.

The range expanded to include the 570GT (added side luggage shelf, glass roof, softer settings), the 570S Spider (folding hard-top) and limited 570S Track Pack and Design Edition cars before being replaced by the Artura in 2021.

First McLaren positioned as an everyday supercar — the foundation of the entire Sports Series and the most attainable carbon-tub Woking car.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the McLaren 570S, the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Original paint, factory carbon exterior, Bowers & Wilkins audio and lifting nose are the option boxes the secondary market rewards.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The M838TE 3.8 twin-turbo V8 is robust when serviced on schedule; check coolant lines, turbo actuators and electronic damper behaviour, and confirm major service evidence (4-year fluid service in particular). A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Coupes in primary colours with full McLaren dealer history, Track Pack or factory carbon spec are the strongest sellers; tired pre-owned cars with deferred service items are widely available and rarely cheaper in the end. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,000–4,000 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$6,000 – $20,000
Fuel economy
8–17 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

McLaren Qualified and a small number of independent specialists are the realistic service options; main-dealer labour is high. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

Depreciation has flattened on the strongest examples but tired cars continue to soften. Coupes with full McLaren Qualified history are clearly the segment to own; Spiders trade at modest premiums in warmer markets and discounts in northern Europe.
