Overview

Why this car matters

The 688 MSO HS is McLaren Special Operations' invitation-only commission built on the 675LT architecture: a 3.8-litre M838TL twin-turbo V8 producing 688 PS / 679 bhp at 7,000 rpm, a seven-speed SSG dual-clutch transaxle, extended MSO carbon-fibre bodywork and an estimated 205 mph top speed. It was offered from 2016 to 2017 to just 25 McLaren-approved buyers worldwide. McLaren never published official MSO HS performance figures, so the 205 mph figure should be read as an unofficial press estimate derived from the 675LT platform, not a confirmed factory claim.

It is the most powerful 675LT derivative, taking the extended 675LT family to 525 units — 500 675LT coupés plus 25 MSO HS cars. The '688' designation refers to the car's 688 PS output. Each of the 25 customer cars was individually commissioned to buyer specification, with extended MSO carbon-fibre bodywork, a blueprinted engine and a unique interior.

The strongest long-term holds are documented cars retaining a complete MSO commissioning file, unbroken McLaren service history, original extended MSO carbon-fibre bodywork and the original buyer-specification interior.

The 688 MSO HS is the most powerful 675LT derivative and one of the tightest MSO commissions of the modern McLaren era — 25 invitation-only cars, each blueprinted and individually specified, sitting at the top of the 675LT / M838TL family alongside the 675LT coupé and 675LT Spider.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Which car is it — 688 MSO HS vs 675LT vs 675LT Spider

The 688 MSO HS sits at the very top of the 675LT / M838TL family — a 25-unit MSO invitation-only commission based on the 675LT coupé. Confirm the specific car is one of the 25 factory MSO HS commissions via VIN cross-check with McLaren Special Operations at Woking and with the delivering McLaren Retailer. The '688' internal designation refers to 688 PS launch power. Verify original bodywork, the extended MSO carbon-fibre package, the blueprinted engine and the unique buyer-specification interior against the MSO commissioning file for that chassis.

MonoCell carbon monocoque, MSO extended carbon bodywork and aero

The MSO HS retains the 675LT's carbon-fibre MonoCell monocoque and adds the MSO Extended Carbon Fibre Package — enlarged front splitter, MSO carbon canards, revised dive planes, carbon side blades, fixed carbon rear wing and extended rear diffuser. Any prior repair on any of these MSO composite panels must be documented on McLaren MSO or McLaren Retailer paperwork — replacement lead times and cost are materially longer than for a standard Super Series 675LT panel. Inspect for cracked or delaminated composite panels, unexplained repaint (particularly on the front splitter, dive planes, side blades, engine cover and rear wing), any missing MSO aero hardware and any body-shop paperwork that is not from McLaren MSO or a McLaren Retailer.

M838TL V8 — blueprinted MSO calibration and unauthorised software

The 688 MSO HS uses the M838TL 3.8L twin-turbo V8 at 688 PS / 679 bhp — the top state of tune of the 675LT engine family, with each of the 25 engines individually blueprinted at MSO. The MSO calibration is the single most important item to preserve. Any aftermarket ECU work, any 'stage' remap, any unauthorised boost or timing adjustment materially compromises both mechanical integrity at the MSO-blueprinted power ceiling and resale value at MSO commission level. Confirm at a McLaren Retailer that (a) the DME fault-code history shows no unauthorised software events, (b) over-rev counters are clean, (c) the ECU calibration matches the MSO commissioning document held at Woking, and (d) all engine service work is documented on McLaren Retailer or MSO paperwork. Route all service through the McLaren Retailer network — non-authorised work on an MSO-commissioned McLaren is a resale-killer at 25-off level.

Seven-speed SSG dual-clutch transaxle and driveline

The MSO HS uses the seven-speed dual-clutch SSG transaxle common to the 675LT / Super Series family. Watch for transmission-warning lights, transmission-adaptation faults and clutch-pack wear beyond factory reference. Confirm no unauthorised transmission software in the McLaren fault-code history at a McLaren Retailer. An MSO-commissioned McLaren with any transmission software provenance issue is materially compromised at 25-off level.

ProActive Chassis Control, carbon-ceramic brakes and wheel package

The MSO HS carries the 675LT's ProActive Chassis Control interlinked hydraulic active suspension platform, with MSO-specific damper and spring calibration on some chassis (confirm per-chassis against the MSO commissioning file). Carbon-ceramic four-wheel disc brakes are the reference. MSO-specified forged wheels vary by chassis — verify the original wheel hardware, ride height, corner-weights and geometry against the MSO commissioning reference, and confirm any prior brake or wheel work is documented on McLaren Retailer or MSO paperwork only.

Interior — bespoke MSO commissioning trim per buyer

Each of the 25 MSO HS cabins was individually commissioned to buyer specification. Typical interior features include extensive carbon-fibre facings, MSO-badged sill plates, Alcantara and leather bespoke trim and buyer-specific stitching. Verify the interior spec on any car matches the MSO commissioning file for that chassis; retrofitted or non-original interior trim materially discounts a 25-off MSO commission.

Cross-market registration, homologation and specification drift

The MSO HS was delivered globally to McLaren-approved buyers, with US, UK, EU and Middle East cars all recorded. Any cross-border movement should be confirmed through the McLaren Retailer network — federalised US MSO HS cars differ from EU-market cars on emissions, lighting and radio-frequency hardware, and any grey-import recommissioning should be documented on McLaren Retailer or MSO paperwork only.

Documentation, MSO commissioning chain and Retailer paperwork

As with every MSO-commissioned McLaren, resale value is materially tied to the completeness of the commissioning-and-service paperwork chain. Confirm (a) the McLaren MSO commissioning file for the specific chassis held at Woking, including the personalisation package chosen (paint, extended carbon package, exhaust, wheels, interior materials), (b) the delivering McLaren Retailer paperwork, (c) an unbroken McLaren Qualified Service History routed through the McLaren Retailer network, (d) a clean DME fault-code history free of unauthorised software or over-rev events, and (e) any bodywork or paintwork documented on McLaren MSO paperwork only. An MSO HS without a complete MSO commissioning file is not a reference car and reprices materially.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
500–2,500 road miles typical — the 688 MSO HS is an MSO-commissioned collector car held as a collection, show or occasional-track asset. Some cars accumulate a small amount of Pure McLaren track-day mileage; an MSO HS used as a daily driver would be a market outlier.
Service interval
Annual service by time (mileage is typically low) through the McLaren Retailer network. McLaren Qualified Service History is mandatory reference paperwork on an MSO-commissioned car.
Annual running cost
USD $12,000 – $35,000 range typical, dominated by insurance, McLaren Retailer service labour, carbon-ceramic wear on any tracked example, Pirelli tyre replacement and MSO-specific consumables. Materially above a standard 675LT because of the MSO parts lead time and the specialist-service overhead on 25-off bodywork.
Fuel economy
No published US EPA figure specific to the MSO HS. Expect mid-teens mpg-US on hard road use; track use materially lower.
Insurance
Agreed-value cover through Hagerty, Chubb Masterpiece, Lockton Private Client or an equivalent HNW carrier is the standing channel in the US, UK and EU; expect five-figure annual premiums appropriate to an MSO-commissioned asset with a low-annual-mileage collection profile.

McLaren Retailer network service — do not break the chain

Route all scheduled service, warranty, telemetry and MSO update work through the McLaren Retailer network. Non-authorised work materially reduces resale value on an MSO-commissioned McLaren and is a red flag at any onward transaction.

MSO commissioning file — the single most valuable non-mechanical asset on the car

The MSO commissioning file for the specific chassis, held at McLaren Special Operations in Woking, is the reference document for original paint, interior, options (including the Extended Carbon Fibre Package and any signature MSO exterior finish) and any subsequent MSO work. An MSO HS without a complete MSO commissioning file loses a material portion of its collector premium.

Storage — MSO bodywork specific considerations

The MSO HS carries extended MSO carbon-fibre panels beyond the 675LT base spec. Long-term storage must be climate-controlled with a McLaren-approved battery conditioner; UV exposure and temperature cycling materially degrade both the exposed carbon surfaces and any MSO-specific paint finish.

Event calendar

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, The Quail (A Motorsports Gathering), Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, McLaren-run Pure McLaren track events, Salon Privé, Concours of Elegance (Hampton Court) and Goodwood Festival of Speed's Supercar Paddock and First Glance run are the standing US and European show channels for an MSO-commissioned McLaren.
Common Problems

Known issues by system

M838TL V8 — unauthorised ECU or 'stage' software on an MSO-blueprinted calibration

The M838TL is the MSO-blueprinted top state of tune of the 675LT engine family at 688 PS / 679 bhp. Aftermarket ECU work materially compromises both mechanical integrity at the MSO-blueprinted power ceiling and the collector premium of an MSO-commissioned car.

CriticalUSD $5,000 – $25,000+ to restore factory MSO calibration and clear historic fault-code events at a McLaren Retailer — case-by-case; material impact on resale even after repair on an MSO-commissioned car.
Symptoms — Non-factory boost or timing curves on McLaren Retailer diagnostics; over-rev counters in DME fault-code history; check-engine light with mapping-related DTCs; unusual power or boost behaviour vs the MSO commissioning reference.
Inspection — McLaren Retailer diagnostics reading full fault-code history including over-rev counters; verify factory MSO boost and timing curves against the MSO commissioning document at Woking; require McLaren Qualified Service History to be unbroken and any ECU work to be documented on McLaren MSO paperwork.
MSO extended carbon bodywork — cracks, unexplained repaint, non-MSO repair paperwork

The 688 MSO HS carries an extended MSO carbon-fibre package beyond the 675LT base — enlarged front splitter, canards, dive planes, side blades, fixed rear wing and extended rear diffuser. These MSO composite panels cannot be sourced through the standard McLaren parts network.

MajorUSD $8,000 – $120,000+ depending on scope — MSO extended carbon panels are quoted case-by-case with materially longer lead times than standard 675LT parts.
Symptoms — Cracked or delaminated composite panels; unexplained repaint on any large panel; mismatched panel gaps; kerb or driveway damage to the extended front splitter; body-shop paperwork that is not from McLaren MSO or a McLaren Retailer.
Inspection — Full body PPI on a lift with a paint-depth gauge on every panel; verify accident-and-paint history via Carfax / HPI / equivalent; require any prior body repair to be documented on McLaren MSO paperwork only.
Seven-speed SSG dual-clutch — mechatronic and clutch-pack wear at MSO-blueprinted power

The seven-speed dual-clutch SSG transaxle is calibrated for the MSO-blueprinted M838TL's power ceiling; any measured clutch-pack wear beyond factory reference is a material item on a 25-off MSO commission.

MajorUSD $6,000 – $25,000+ for mechatronic or clutch-pack work at a McLaren Retailer on this platform.
Symptoms — Notable clunk on cold shifts; hesitation on aggressive downshifts; transmission-warning lights; measured clutch-pack wear beyond factory reference; any transmission-software fault-code history.
Inspection — McLaren Retailer diagnostics on transmission software, adaptive shift maps and measured clutch-pack wear; verify no unauthorised transmission software in the fault-code history.
MSO paperwork gap — missing commissioning file, missing Retailer delivery paperwork

Original MSO commissioning materials are the reference documentation for the specific chassis. A gap in this paperwork is a collector-premium issue, not a mechanical issue — but at 25-off MSO level it is a decisive factor.

MajorNo mechanical cost, but a material resale discount that must be priced into the transaction — case-by-case on a 25-off MSO commission.
Symptoms — Any 688 MSO HS offered without a McLaren MSO commissioning file, without the original delivering-Retailer paperwork, or with a broken McLaren Qualified Service History.
Inspection — Cross-check the VIN against the McLaren MSO ledger at Woking and against the delivering Retailer's records; require the seller to produce the original commissioning file, options-and-spec sheet and delivery paperwork before proceeding.
Interior — bespoke MSO trim wear and non-original substitutions

The MSO HS cabin was individually commissioned per buyer. Non-original interior substitutions are difficult and expensive to reverse at MSO paperwork level.

ModerateUSD $2,000 – $15,000+ for MSO-paperwork interior trim restoration at a McLaren Retailer.
Symptoms — Ultrafabric or Alcantara wear at the seat bolsters and armrest; non-original head-unit substitution; aftermarket audio system fitted; damaged carbon-fibre door or cabin surfaces; missing MSO bespoke trim items vs the commissioning file.
Inspection — Full inspection of every interior surface against the MSO commissioning-file trim spec; verify head-unit and any audio hardware is factory-original or documented on McLaren Retailer replacement paperwork.
Carbon-ceramic brakes and MSO wheel package — swaps and non-original hardware

Original carbon-ceramic hardware and MSO-specified wheels are car-specific reference items on a 25-off MSO commission.

ModerateUSD $4,000 – $45,000+ to restore original MSO brake and wheel hardware — case-by-case with materially long lead times.
Symptoms — Non-original brake discs or pads fitted; non-MSO wheels; visibly mismatched brake or wheel hardware; unexplained brake-line or fluid-service paperwork from non-McLaren sources.
Inspection — Verify original carbon-ceramic hardware at all four corners; verify original MSO wheels against the commissioning-file spec; require any brake or wheel work to be documented on McLaren Retailer or MSO paperwork.

Investment

Long-term outlook

Strong HoldHorizon: 10+ years

Three anchored facts underwrite the 688 MSO HS investment case. It is the most powerful 675LT derivative — an invitation-only 25-unit McLaren Special Operations commission based on the 675LT coupé, taking the extended 675LT family to 525 units and placing the MSO HS in the same tightly-limited MSO tier as the P1 GTR, Senna GTR and Sabre for absolute rarity. It carries the M838TL 3.8L twin-turbo V8 at 688 PS / 679 bhp — the top state of tune of the 675LT engine family, with each engine individually blueprinted at MSO — and an estimated 205 mph top speed. And the public-auction record, while shallow, is strongly-trending: USD $390,000 in 2020 to USD $830,000 in 2023 on the only two public hammer prints. Best hold: a documented MSO HS with complete MSO commissioning file, unbroken McLaren Qualified Service History, all original extended MSO carbon-fibre bodywork and buyer-specification interior, and no unauthorised ECU or bodywork history.
