A skunkworks project from BMW M in Garching, the 1 Series M Coupé took the compact 1 Series shell, grafted on the wide track, brakes, differential and rear axle of the E92 M3, and dropped in a tuned twin-turbo straight-six. The result was short-wheelbase, communicative and immediately beloved — Top Gear's 2011 Car of the Year.
Planned as a strictly limited run, demand forced BMW to lift the cap, but production still lasted barely a year. Notably, it was the first M car to use an engine shared with lesser BMWs rather than a bespoke M unit.
A single-year, manual-only M car built in small numbers and already regarded as a modern-classic high point.
