The "Clownshoe" — a shooting-brake roof grafted onto the Z3 roadster to add rigidity — is among the most characterful cars BMW M has ever built. Developed at Garching and built alongside the Z3 at Spartanburg, South Carolina, it shared its doors and everything forward of the A-pillar with the M Roadster but gained a hatchback body that made it the most torsionally rigid BMW of its day.
Its divisive-then-adored styling, straight-six M engines and rarity have made it a genuine cult collectible.
