BMW 2002 tii & Turbo

Car Collector International Editorial

Overview

Why this car matters

The fuel-injected 2002 tii and turbocharged 2002 Turbo are the high-performance peak of BMW's 02 Series — the compact two-door saloons that made BMW's name as a builder of drivers' cars and set the conceptual template later carried by the M3. The tii added Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection to the 2002 for sharper response.

The Turbo, developed by BMW Motorsport as Europe's first turbocharged production car, paired the tii's injected engine with a KKK turbocharger, wide plastic arch extensions, a deep front air dam and a ducktail — frequently finished with the tricolour Motorsport stripes that became the M livery. Launched at the 1973 Frankfurt show just as the oil crisis struck, its short life makes it the rarest and most collectible 02.

The 02 Series established BMW's driver's-car reputation, and the tii and Turbo are its sporting apex — the direct conceptual ancestors of the M3.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Chassis and engine authentication

Authenticate stamped chassis and engine numbers against factory or club records. For the tii, verify correct Kugelfischer injection hardware and unmolested originality. For the Turbo, authenticate the wide-arch bodywork, KKK turbo installation and left-hand-drive-only status; documented history is decisive.

Body and originality

Confirm body originality, panel identity and restoration standard against a marque specialist.

Mechanical inspection and service history

Confirm continuous service history and any rebuild history for the engine, transmission and driveline against a marque specialist.

Provenance and ownership history

Restoration standard, originality of body and driveline, and any documented ownership record are the main value drivers.

Each region quoted in its local currency — independent market readings, not FX conversions

Two markets under one roof. The Turbo is a blue-chip historic BMW — rarity, Motorsport pedigree and its first-production-turbo status carry the best cars into six figures. The tii is the connoisseur's driver's 02, valued on originality, matching numbers and unmolested condition. For both, documented history, correct injection hardware and freedom from rust in the known trouble spots separate the best cars.

Long-term outlook

Strong HoldHorizon: 5–10 years

The Turbo is an established blue-chip collector BMW whose Motorsport provenance and first-turbo historical significance underpin long-term desirability; the tii offers a more accessible route into the same bloodline, where originality and condition lead value. Both sit at the sporting apex of the range that built BMW's reputation.

This section is Car Collector International's editorial judgement on where this model sits in the collector market, based on the production, specification and market data set out in this guide.
