Car Collector International Editorial
Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (C190/R190)
Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in 2014 as the successor to the SLS AMG, the C190 (coupe) / R190 (roadster) AMG GT was the first two-seat sports car engineered from a blank sheet by Mercedes-AMG at Affalterbach. All variants share a front-mid-mounted 4.0-litre twin-turbo M178 V8 with a rear transaxle 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, in a broadly common aluminium spaceframe with a long bonnet and set-back cabin.

Over a single generation Mercedes-AMG built out a wide ladder — base GT and GT S coupes (2015), GT Roadster and GT C coupe / roadster (2017), the track-focused GT R (2017), the limited GT R Roadster and GT R Pro (2019), and the halo GT Black Series (2021–2023) with a flat-plane 720 PS version of the M178 designated M178 LS2. The X290 four-door 'AMG GT' saloon shares the badge but not the platform and is out of scope for this guide.

Mercedes-AMG never officially published cumulative per-trim production figures for the standard GT, GT S, GT C (non-Edition 50) or GT R coupe; Road & Track (October 2022) noted that AMG declined to share totals at end of production. Confirmed figures are: GT S Edition 1 375 worldwide (Wikipedia; corroborated by BaT listings); GT C Edition 50 500 units (⚠️ Verify — AMG In Years lists 500 per body style, i.e. 500 coupes plus 500 roadsters, while Wikipedia's '1 of 500' wording implies 500 combined); GT R Roadster 750 worldwide (AMG Affalterbach press release, March 2019); GT R Pro 750 worldwide (Mercedes-Benz USA press release, 15 July 2019, primary source); GT Black Series approximately 1,700 units built (MercedesBlog, February 2022; confirmed by a Mercedes spokesperson to Motor1 as time-limited rather than numerically capped), of which around 40 were P One Edition cars sold only to AMG ONE allocation holders (⚠️ Verify — duPont Registry listing text; not corroborated by an AMG press release directly consulted). A quoted ~2,000 cap for the standard GT R coupe (Autocar, July 2016) was never confirmed by AMG.

The AMG GT was AMG's second wholly in-house sports car after the SLS and the platform on which AMG established a full V8 sports-car range — from series-production GT/S/C to the 750-unit hard-cap GT R Pro and the flat-plane Black Series. It closes the front-engine AMG V8 chapter before the hybrid AMG GT successor (C192) and the AMG ONE hypercar.

Collector Variants

Limited & special editions

The models below represent the most significant limited and special edition variants — factory-produced cars that command meaningful premiums over standard examples and warrant specific attention from serious collectors.

AMG GT S Edition 1 · 2015

375 worldwide
Distinguishing features
Launch edition of the GT S with gloss-black aerodynamic package (front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser and fixed rear spoiler), red brake calipers and red interior stitching over black leather / dinamica. Mechanically identical to a standard GT S (510 PS).
Value premium
Presently trading within the standard GT S band on public evidence (BaT $71,000 in 2024); a modest premium to the best standard GT S in equivalent condition is defensible.
Inspection points
Verify Edition 1 badging, gloss-black aero pieces (front splitter and side skirts), red-stitched interior and factory build documentation. Non-Edition 1 GT S cars have been retrofitted with the aero pack.

AMG GT C Edition 50 (Coupe & Roadster) · 2017

500 (⚠️ Verify — AMG In Years lists 500 per body style, i.e. 500 coupes plus 500 roadsters; Wikipedia's '1 of 500' steering-wheel wording implies 500 combined). US allocation confirmed at 50 coupes plus 50 roadsters (Wikipedia).
Distinguishing features
50th-anniversary GT C in Designo Graphite Grey Magno or Designo Cashmere White Magno, with bronze accents, matte-bronze forged wheels, Edition 50 badging and numbered '1 of 500' steering-wheel plaque. Standard GT C mechanicals (557 PS, wider body, rear-wheel steer).
Value premium
Public 2022–2026 auction evidence for Edition 50 cars is thin. Expect a defensible premium over a standard GT C in the same body style in equivalent condition.
Inspection points
Confirm numbered plaque, factory Designo paint code (Graphite Grey Magno / Cashmere White Magno), bronze exterior trim and matte-bronze forged wheels are original. Match steering-wheel number to build documentation.

AMG GT R Roadster · 2019–2021

750 worldwide (AMG Affalterbach press release, March 2019; corroborated by Wikipedia, autoevolution, AMG In Years)
Distinguishing features
Open-top version of the GT R with the same 585 PS M178 V8, rear-wheel steering, active aero and 9-stage traction control. Green Hell Magno is a paint option carried over from the coupe, not a separate edition.
Value premium
Modest premium over a comparable GT R Coupe at similar mileage on current evidence (BaT $124,500 for a 19k-mile 2020 example in Jul 2025).
Inspection points
Verify 750-unit hard-cap by AMG build documentation. Confirm soft-top mechanism operates correctly and rear-axle steering unit is fault-free on OBD.

AMG GT R Pro · 2019–2020

750 worldwide (Mercedes-Benz USA press release, 15 July 2019, primary source; corroborated by Wikipedia and automobile-catalog)
Distinguishing features
Track-focused GT R: manually adjustable coilover suspension, active drivetrain mounts, carbon-fibre roof and torque tube, carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon bucket seats and lightweight forged wheels. 585 PS shared with GT R.
Value premium
40–65% over a comparable GT R Coupe in equivalent condition. US BaT $158,500–$180,000 across 2025; Bonhams Zoute Europe €201,250 inc. premium (Oct 2024).
Inspection points
Verify factory coilover settings against AMG setting sheet; confirm active drivetrain mounts function; check carbon roof, torque-tube cover and carbon buckets are unrepaired. Track use is expected — look for cage/harness holes and re-torque history.

AMG GT Black Series · 2021–2023

Approximately 1,700 built (MercedesBlog, Feb 2022; confirmed by a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson to Motor1 as time-limited over an ~18-month run from October 2020 rather than numerically capped)
Distinguishing features
720 PS flat-plane-crank version of the M178 V8 (designated M178 LS2) — the most powerful series-production AMG V8 to date. Manually adjustable rear wing, extensive lightweight bodywork, carbon roof and bonnet, dedicated AMG Track Package suspension.
Value premium
Standalone tier well above every other C190 variant: $290,000–$511,000 across 2025–2026 BaT / Gooding evidence, colour- and mileage-dependent.
Inspection points
Confirm M178 LS2 engine number and AMG-dealer service including LS2-specific ECU updates. Verify factory rear-wing adjustment hardware and carbon panel integrity (weave show-through at stone-chip points). Track-day use is common — check tyre / brake history and any harness mounting.

AMG GT Black Series P One Edition · 2021

Approximately 40 units (⚠️ Verify — duPont Registry listing text; not corroborated by an AMG press release directly consulted). RM Sotheby's Monterey 2023 lot description confirms exclusivity to AMG Project One allocation holders.
Distinguishing features
AMG Motorsport W11-inspired livery in Obsidian Black; interior and trim referencing AMG ONE. Mechanically identical to a standard Black Series.
Value premium
Clear standalone tier above standard Black Series. RM Sotheby's Monterey 2023 delivery-mileage car $775,000; BaT 1,700-mi December 2025 $600,000.
Inspection points
Confirm AMG ONE allocation-holder chain of title and P One-specific livery, decals and interior trim are factory-applied. Match VIN and build documentation to AMG-published P One list where available.
Authentication
Standard Black Series cars with aftermarket W11-livery wraps are the primary confusion risk. Only cars documented as sold to AMG ONE allocation holders carry the P One Edition designation.

Production figures sourced from official marque records and specialist registers. Verify chassis documentation with the relevant marque register before purchase.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (C190/R190), the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. For collector variants: hard-cap number in-hand (GT R Pro, GT R Roadster, Edition 50, P One), original paint, delivery mileage, unmodified aero and factory carbon content. For series cars: manual-only trims don't exist here — spec, colour and mileage decide.

Mechanical inspection priorities

M178 V8 (cross-plane) is robust; the Black Series M178 LS2 flat-plane crank is unique to that variant and requires strict AMG-dealer service compliance. Verify ECU update history, dry-sump service (Black Series) and gearbox software revisions across all variants. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Numbered limited variants first (GT S Edition 1, GT C Edition 50, GT R Pro, GT R Roadster, Black Series, Black Series P One). Within the series-production trims, low-mileage GT R coupes and manual-spec GT C Roadsters carry the residual premium. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,000–4,000 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$6,000 – $20,000
Fuel economy
8–17 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

AMG dealer network handles all variants; independent AMG specialists are appropriate for GT/S/C. Black Series and GT R Pro should stay within AMG-dealer service for warranty and resale reasons. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

AMG GT Black Series (incl. P One Edition)

Standard Black Series trades $290k–$511k on 2025–2026 evidence, heavily colour- and mileage-dependent. P One Edition (~40 units) anchors separately at $600k–$775k. Values corrected roughly 30–40% for standard cars from a 2023 peak; P One remained elevated.

Each region quoted in its local currency — independent market readings, not FX conversions

The C190/R190 range spans roughly 12× from a driver-grade GT S to a delivery-mileage Black Series P One. Series-production trims (GT, GT S, GT C, GT R) have plateaued at 60–70% of original MSRP; GT R coupes have compressed to near-GT C territory. The GT R Pro's 750-unit cap is well recognised — US BaT trades run $158k–$180k, Europe pays a clear premium (€201,250 at Bonhams Zoute Oct 2024). The Black Series peaked in mid-2023 and has corrected 30–40% for standard examples through 2025–2026, while the ~40-unit P One Edition remained firm at $600k–$775k.

Long-term outlook

Strong HoldHorizon: 5–10 years

Within the range, hard-cap collector variants (GT R Pro 750, GT R Roadster 750, Black Series ~1,700, P One ~40) hold defensible long-term positions and lead the trend. Series-production GT/S/C/R have plateaued at driver-value levels and are expected to remain there through the transition to the C192 successor. The Black Series is the halo model of the entire C190 generation and the last front-engine V8 AMG sports car of its kind.
