Debut at the French GP, Reims, July 1954: a 1–2 finish for Fangio and Kling, with Herrmann taking fastest lap. Over 12 Grands Prix the W196 took 9 wins, 8 poles and 9 fastest laps. Fangio took the drivers' titles in both 1954 and 1955; Stirling Moss won his first GP at Aintree 1955, leading a Mercedes 1-2-3-4. Racing manager Alfred Neubauer. Mercedes-Benz withdrew from Grand Prix racing at the end of 1955, following the Le Mans disaster.
