Overview

Why this car matters

The Mercedes-Benz 500 E is the W124 super-saloon co-developed and hand-built with Porsche. Each car shuttled between Porsche's Zuffenhausen works and Mercedes' Sindelfingen paint shop in an 18-day build — work Porsche took on partly amid its own financial crisis. The car was renamed E 500 at the 1993 facelift and was conceived as the E34 BMW M5's rival.

The Porsche-built W124 super-saloon and one of the defining performance saloons of its era. Porsche-built provenance, documented history and originality are the defining factors.

What to pay

Market overview
The record sits against a $13,000 recorded floor (November 2022) — an extreme spread driven by mileage, originality and history; strong drivers occupy the wide middle, and US-market cars (1,505 imported) have their own following. Recommissioning costs on neglected cars are substantial; the hand-built complexity cuts both ways.
