Overview

Why this car matters

Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign on the Alfetta's transaxle platform — clutch and gearbox mounted at the rear axle for near-50:50 weight distribution — with De Dion rear suspension. Introduced at the 1974 Turin Motor Show as the Alfetta GT with the 1,779 cc twin-cam inline-four producing 122 bhp.

The range evolved continuously to 1987, three years after the Alfetta saloon ended. Total Alfetta production (saloon and coupé combined) exceeded 400,000 units; the coupé family total is not separately published.

The GTV6 is approaching the inflection point from affordable classic to acknowledged collector car; Callaway, Turbodelta and South African 3.0 variants lead specialist interest.

Chassis and engine authentication

Authenticate stamped chassis and engine numbers against factory or club records. For the Alfetta coupé specifically, verify the transaxle and De Dion rear suspension are original and functional, confirm which engine and facelift specification the car is (pre-1980 chrome-bumper GT/GTV vs post-1980 body-coloured GTV/GTV6), and note the Callaway, Turbodelta and South African GTV6 3.0 as separate collector categories.

Confirm body originality, panel identity and restoration standard against a marque specialist.

Mechanical inspection and service history

Confirm continuous service history and any rebuild history for the engine, transmission and driveline against a marque specialist.
