The Autodelta lightweight — European Touring Car Champion 1966, 1967 and 1968.
Developed by Autodelta — Alfa Romeo's racing division — as a lightweight homologation special for FIA Group 2 touring car racing. GTA (A = Alleggerita, Italian for lightweight): outer body panels replaced with aluminium alloy; inner panels of thinner-gauge steel bonded and pop-riveted together; plexiglass side and rear windows; magnesium alloy engine components (valve cover, sump, timing cover, bell housing) and Campagnolo magnesium alloy wheels on the road version; lightweight interior. Dry weight reduced from over 900 kg in the standard Sprint GT to 745 kg in the GTA Stradale.
Engine: 1,570 cc twin-cam inline-four with twin-spark-plug cylinder head (two plugs per cylinder), higher compression, sportier camshafts and twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors — 115 bhp at 6,000 rpm (Stradale); up to approximately 170 bhp (race/Corsa). The GTA 1300 Junior, introduced 1968, used a 1,290 cc version of the same architecture: approximately 450 built (sources give figures up to 492); the Junior road version lacked the magnesium components and plexiglass of the 1600. Won the European Touring Car Championship in 1966, 1967, and 1968.
