Overview

Why this car matters

Built to homologate Ford for Group A touring-car racing, the Sierra RS Cosworth combined a Cosworth-developed 2.0-litre turbocharged YBB four-cylinder, distinctive whale-tail aerodynamics and a stiffened chassis on the standard Sierra three-door hatchback. The original three-door (1986–87) was followed by 500 RS500 derivatives built by Tickford for full Group A homologation, and then by the four-door Sapphire RS Cosworth (1988–90, rear-wheel drive) and the four-wheel-drive Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4 (1990–92).

The RS500 anchors the entire fast-Ford market; the three-door Cosworth and the 4x4 Sapphire sit immediately below.

The Sierra Cosworth, especially the RS500, is the foundation of fast-Ford collecting; values are driven by originality, low mileage and continuous documented history.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching numbers where applicable, original manuals, invoices and evidence of work by recognised marque specialists. Originality of body, low mileage, original colour combination, RS Owners Club documentation and continuous service history are decisive.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The Cosworth YB engine is robust when correctly maintained; turbo health, cooling, ignition mapping and gearbox condition are core items. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, underbody photography, suspension and chassis-point inspection, brake condition and a road test long enough to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted car.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory seams and panel gaps. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, poor paintwork, corrosion, incorrect panels and missing factory trim. Documented cosmetic restoration is acceptable; concealed accident repair must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

RS500 (500 built) is the apex; three-door Cosworth and 4x4 Sapphire are the usable collector tiers; standard Sapphire RS Cosworth (RWD) is the entry. Specification, colour, transmission and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,500–4,000 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$3,500 – $10,000
Fuel economy
15–24 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location and declared value.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres date out, fuel systems suffer from ethanol, batteries fail and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Fast-Ford specialists are widely available in the UK; period-correct restoration is essential to preserve value. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific trim, suspension, fuel system, electronics and engine components. A cheap car waiting on unobtainable parts is rarely cheap in collector ownership.

Long-term outlook

EmergingHorizon: 5–10 years

RS500 cars are blue-chip within the fast-Ford world. Three-door Cosworths and 4x4 Sapphires should continue to appreciate at the originality-led end; modified cars depend on build quality and history.
