Overview

Why this car matters

The S550 was a clean-sheet redesign that finally gave the Mustang independent rear suspension across the range, introduced a global export programme (including right-hand-drive), and delivered two of the most technically distinctive Mustangs ever built: the 5.2-litre flat-plane-crank 'Voodoo' Shelby GT350 / GT350R (2015–20) and the 5.2-litre supercharged 'Predator' Shelby GT500 (2020–22).

Alongside these sat the Coyote 5.0 GT, the 2.3-litre EcoBoost four (later with the High Performance Package), the 2019–20 Bullitt return, and the 2021–23 Mach 1 as the send-off variant.

The S550 modernised the Mustang platform, took it global, and produced the flat-plane Voodoo GT350 — a naturally aspirated, 8,250 rpm V8 sports car unique in modern American production and unlikely to be repeated.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Ford Mustang (S550), the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, VIN and door-tag consistency, a Marti Report where available, original window sticker where possible, and evidence of major service work by recognised Mustang specialists. Original paint, unmodified drivetrain, documented low mileage, factory carbon wheels (GT350R), Ford Performance track hardware documentation and Marti Report where available.

Mechanical inspection priorities

5.2 Voodoo (GT350) is a naturally aspirated flat-plane-crank V8 with an 8,250 rpm redline — service history and correct oil are critical. 5.2 Predator (GT500) is a cross-plane supercharged V8; supercharger condition and heat-exchanger service are decisive. Coyote 5.0 is durable; 2018+ direct-injection cars can suffer intake-valve deposits. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, compression or leak-down testing where appropriate, factory-tool diagnostic scans on later cars, underbody photography, suspension and chassis-point inspection, brake condition and a road test long enough to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance is almost always more expensive than buying the better-sorted car.

Body, paint and accident history

Mustang bodyshells are unibody steel and vulnerable to hidden collision repair and (on earlier cars) corrosion in floors, torque boxes, cowl and rear frame rails. Use a paint-depth gauge, a lift inspection and a specialist familiar with the generation. Documented cosmetic restoration is acceptable; concealed accident or structural repair must be priced severely, and modified cars must be judged on the quality and documentation of the build.

Specification strategy

2015 GT350R (first-year, 37 units built), Voodoo GT350 (any year, particularly R-spec), 2020–22 Predator GT500 (Carbon Fiber Track Pack cars in particular), 2022 GT500 Heritage Edition (Brittany Blue), 2021–23 Mach 1 (Handling Package), and 2019–20 Bullitt lead the collector tiers. EcoBoost High Performance Package cars are a niche enthusiast tier; standard GT and volume EcoBoost cars are the everyday pool. Colour, transmission, option packages and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,500–5,000 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$2,000 – $6,000
Fuel economy
14–26 mpg depending on model and use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by variant (Shelby / SVT / GT500 command higher), storage location and declared value.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres date out, batteries fail, and stored cars need exercise. Mustangs reward a documented maintenance rhythm — it protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

A Ford Performance / Roush specialist with Voodoo and Predator experience is what to look for. Both engines sit outside general modular-V8 expertise. Aftermarket support for most Mustang generations is exceptionally strong, but originality-critical trim, correct-date-coded components and variant-specific parts (SVO turbo hardware, LT5/Voodoo/Predator internals, GT500 supercharger components) sit outside general availability and need a knowledgeable specialist.

Long-term outlook

Strong HoldHorizon: 10+ years

The Voodoo GT350 / GT350R is very likely to be treated by the market as a modern instant-classic on engine architecture alone. The Predator GT500 will follow on halo status; Mach 1 and Bullitt sit in the next tier down.
