Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in October 1959, the Jaguar Mk2 is Sir William Lyons' 'grace, pace and space' sports saloon — the four-wheel-disc-braked development of the 1955–59 2.4/3.4 saloon, and in 3.8 form the fastest production saloon in the world in its day.

The Daimler 2.5-V8 and V8-250 were the badge-engineered siblings within the same body.

One of the defining British sports saloons and a Lyons-era Jaguar signature. Provenance, engine identity and documented originality are the defining factors.

What to look for

Body, chassis and structural condition

Inspect body, chassis and structural condition carefully. Confirm the extent of any body restoration and originality of panels and trim against a Jaguar marque specialist. For the Mk2 specifically, verify the exact variant (2.4 / 3.4 / 3.8 / 240 / 340) and confirm engine identity against build records.

Engine, gearbox and driveline identity

Confirm engine, gearbox and driveline identity against build records where available; verify service and rebuild history against a marque specialist.

Provenance and ownership history

Restoration standard, originality of body and driveline, and any documented ownership record are the main value drivers.

Variant identification

Verify the exact variant against build records and period documentation.

Market overview
Specification drives this market more than almost any classic — engine (3.8 most desirable, then 3.4; 2.4 cars trade far lower), gearbox (manual/overdrive over automatic), power steering, and even colour materially move values; recent 2.4 results span roughly £2,200–£16,500 (The Classic Valuer); period-modified Coombs cars have reached £113,500; 240/340 run-outs remain the value entry, with 240s recorded £2,366–£30,375.
