Jaguar's 1990s 217 mph supercar: controversial when new, increasingly respected now.
The XJ220 began as an all-wheel-drive V12 concept and reached production as a lighter twin-turbo V6 supercar capable of extraordinary speed. Its launch controversy depressed values for years, but hindsight has been kinder.
Today the XJ220 is recognised as one of the great 1990s supercars, with specialist support and limited supply improving confidence.
It was briefly the fastest production car in the world and remains one of the most dramatic British supercars ever made.

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Jaguar XJ220, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching chassis and engine details where applicable, original manuals, invoices and evidence that major service work has been carried out by recognised specialists. Low mileage, single ownership, original paint, correct Speedline wheels and Don Law/XJ220 specialist history drive demand.
The TWR-derived twin-turbo V6 is strong but specialist-only; fuel cells, turbos, cooling and parts availability dominate ownership. A proper pre-purchase inspection should include cold start behaviour, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, diagnostic scans on modern cars, underbody photography, suspension pick-up point checks, brake condition and a road test long enough to reveal heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance is usually more expensive than buying the better car.
Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist who knows the model's factory seams. Collector value is heavily affected by structural repairs, poor paintwork, corrosion, incorrect panels and missing factory trim. Cosmetic restoration can be acceptable when documented; hidden accident repair should be priced severely.
Buy on service history, fuel-cell age, specialist maintenance and careful inspection of tyres, hydraulics and bodywork. Specification, colour, transmission and limited-production variants can move values dramatically. Buy the best-documented car in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will require years of corrective work.

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres date out, batteries fail and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.
XJ220-specific expertise is essential; very few workshops understand the car properly. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific trim, suspension, electronics and engine components. A cheap car waiting on unobtainable parts is rarely cheap in collector-car ownership.

The XJ220 has moved from misunderstood to appreciated. It remains less liquid than Ferrari F40/F50 peers, but scarcity and speed-record status support long-term interest.

The XJ220's narrative has improved, but specialist ownership keeps the buyer pool selective. Excellent cars should continue to strengthen from a comparatively undervalued base.
