Overview

Why this car matters

Giulio Alfieri's spaceframe masterpiece: ~200 small-diameter tubes weighing just 36 kg, the four-cylinder engine canted 45° for a low bonnet, 250F-derived suspension and transaxle, disc brakes; Stirling Moss won its debut at Reims, July 1959; every car sold to privateers after Maserati's works withdrawal.

The mid-engined Tipo 63/64/65 descendants followed.

The definitive front-engined Maserati sports-racer and one of the most charismatic spaceframe designs of its era. Chassis authentication and documented competition history are the defining factors.

Market overview
A 1959 Tipo 61 went unsold against a $5–6M estimate at Gooding Pebble Beach in August 2024 — sellers' aspirations now sit well above the last public results. Crosthwaite & Gardiner re-creations form a distinct market tier, trading from roughly $220,000 to under £1M; listings must be checked carefully for original-versus-recreation status.
