Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in 2013, the Porsche 918 Spyder combined a 4.6-litre naturally aspirated V8 with two electric motors for a combined output of 887 hp. 918 cars were built, with the optional Weissach Package — a lightweight specification with magnesium wheels and additional carbon trim — fitted to a minority of cars.

The 918 has held its value strongly from new and is firmly established as the technically defining Porsche hypercar of the hybrid era. Weissach-package cars trade at a meaningful premium over standard 918s.

Porsche's first plug-in hybrid hypercar and the technical benchmark of its era.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Porsche 918 Spyder, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching numbers, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Continuous Porsche service history, Weissach Package documentation, original wheels and books, low documented mileage.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The 4.6 V8 is robust; high-voltage battery service intervals, cooling and electronics are the dominant ownership variables. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint, carbon and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps, carbon weave alignment and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished carbon, poor paintwork, replaced panels and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Weissach Package cars lead. Liquid Metal Silver and Acid Green Weissach trim sit at the top of the public market. Specification, colour, options, factory programme inclusion (where applicable) and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,000–3,500 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$15,000 – $60,000+
Fuel economy
8–17 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, batteries on hybrid hypercars require specific service procedures, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Porsche Classic / 918-trained specialists only. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox, battery (where applicable) and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

Long-term outlook

Blue ChipHorizon: 10+ years

918 Spyder is firmly blue-chip and benefits from 'Holy Trinity' association with LaFerrari and McLaren P1. Weissach Package cars should continue to lead.
