Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in 2001 as Lamborghini's first all-new V12 under Audi ownership, the Murciélago carried the V12, scissor-door, four-wheel-drive flagship formula into the 21st century. It evolved from the original 6.2-litre car through the LP640 facelift to the limited LP670-4 SV, with Roadster and homologation-special derivatives along the way.

LP640 manual coupes and the LP670-4 SV are now established collector cars; standard early cars and e-gear cars remain the accessible end of the V12 Lamborghini market.

The last manual-available V12 flagship Lamborghini and the bridge between Diablo and Aventador eras.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Lamborghini Murciélago, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching numbers, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Manual gearbox specification, original colour, full Lamborghini service history, complete books and tools, and SV factory paperwork (where applicable).

Mechanical inspection priorities

The 6.2/6.5 V12 is durable; e-gear hydraulics, clutch life and exhaust manifolds are practical service concerns. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint, carbon and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps, carbon weave alignment and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished carbon, poor paintwork, replaced panels and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

LP670-4 SV leads the range. LP640 manual coupes and Roadsters are firming. Early 6.2 cars are the most accessible V12 Murciélago. Specification, colour, options, factory programme inclusion (where applicable) and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,000–3,500 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$6,000 – $20,000
Fuel economy
8–17 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, batteries on hybrid hypercars require specific service procedures, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Lamborghini-experienced specialists are essential; e-gear hydraulics and electronics require model-specific knowledge. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox, battery (where applicable) and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

Manual Murciélagos and the LP670-4 SV have decoupled from the rest of the range. Standard early cars and e-gear coupes remain accessible but have firmed steadily as the V12 manual Lamborghini era closes.

Long-term outlook

Strong HoldHorizon: 5–10 years

LP670-4 SV is blue-chip; LP640 manual coupes should continue to firm as the last manual V12 Lamborghinis. Standard cars depend on originality and service history.
