Overview

Why this car matters

Launched in 2003 (sales from 2004), the DB9 was the first production car off Aston Martin's bonded-aluminium VH platform and the foundation of an entire generation of cars. Powered by a 6.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12, it offered around 450 bhp at launch, rising to 510 bhp in later Sport and GT editions. The car was offered as a coupe and Volante convertible across a long 12-year production run.

For its era, the DB9 was a genuinely modern GT — aluminium body panels, double-wishbone suspension, optional 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic — and it remains the most affordable route into modern V12 Aston Martin ownership.

Definitive modern-era Aston Martin GT and the platform foundation for the DBS, Rapide and Vanquish.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Aston Martin DB9, the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Original paint, factory colour combination, full Aston Martin main-dealer history and low recorded ownership.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The 6.0 V12 is robust but expensive to service; coil packs, coolant pipes (front bank), gearbox-cooler lines and rear differential bushes are the recurring service items. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Late-production cars (post-2013 facelift) with verified factory service history and 'Dynamic Pack' / Carbon Edition specification are the rising cars to watch. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Ownership

Living with it

Typical mileage
1,000–4,000 miles typical for collector use
Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$3,500 – $10,000
Fuel economy
15–28 mpg depending on use
Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

A small number of Aston Martin-trained independents now offer realistic running costs; routine main-dealer work is significantly more expensive. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

The DB9 is in transition from depreciating modern to recognised modern classic. Facelift cars and the DB9 GT are firming as the most desirable; early Mk1 cars remain inexpensive but require the same expensive service items.

Long-term outlook

EmergingHorizon: 5–10 years

Final-year GT cars and well-documented manuals are the most likely to firm. Early cars remain useable bargains rather than investments.
