Overview

Why this car matters

The 340 family was Ferrari's first Lampredi-engined road / competition line. Launched as the 340 America in 1950, it was joined in 1952 by the Carrera Panamericana-oriented 340 Mexico and in 1953 by the 340 MM.

Bodies were coachbuilt by Touring, Vignale and Ghia; specifications and body attributions vary car by car.

The introduction of the 4.1-litre Lampredi V12 to Ferrari's road / competition line and the direct ancestor of the 342 America and Ferrari 375 (America, MM & Plus). Chassis identity, coachbuilder attribution and any period-competition record are decisive.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis and engine identity, coachbuilder attribution and every body- and engine-specific record before pricing. For the 340 specifically, verify the sub-model (America, Mexico or MM), coachbuilder attribution and any period-competition record against Ferrari Classiche and marque-specialist sources — total production counts across the family are contested.

Coachbuilder attribution and body-specific documentation

These early Lampredi Ferraris were bodied individually. Confirm the specific coachbuilder against Ferrari Classiche's records and period photography, and reject any car whose bodywork attribution cannot be documented.

Restoration history and originality

Restoration standard is decisive. Confirm the extent of any body, trim or mechanical restoration, the coachbuilder- and race-shop-competence of the shop that carried it out, and the originality of engine, gearbox and driveline against Ferrari Classiche's records.

Ownership continuity and provenance

Ownership continuity is a material value driver. Confirm the ownership record, matching identity of engine and chassis, and any period competition or concours record against the Ferrari Classiche archive.

Agreed-value classic-Ferrari policy with limited mileage and secure storage. Early Lampredi-engined Ferraris sit in the highest specialist tier of classic-Ferrari underwriting; chassis identity, coachbuilder and any period-competition record are material factors.

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis and engine identity, coachbuilder attribution and every body- and engine-specific record before committing to a purchase — for these cars, chassis histories are frequently entangled and require file-level verification.

Coachbuilder- and race-shop-competent restoration

Body, trim and mechanical work must be carried out by shops competent in the specific coachbuilder's construction methods and, on the competition cars, in period race-engine and driveline practice. Documented restoration history by an appropriate specialist is a material value driver.

Current value bands by region

Each region quoted in its local currency — independent market readings, not FX conversions

Competition-history barchettas anchor the top of the market at $5.7–8.2M; berlinettas and coupés typically trade in the $3–4M band. Recent softness: a 340 America went unsold at Bonhams' Zoute Sale in October 2024 against a €3–4M estimate, and another was unsold at RM Sotheby's Monterey in 2025 — provenance and originality now separate results sharply.
