Ferrari 348

The last Enzo-era junior V8 Ferrari, still analogue and increasingly reassessed.

Ferrari 348
Overview

Why this car matters

The 348 followed the 328 with Testarossa-inspired side strakes, a longitudinal V8 and transverse gearbox. Long overshadowed by the F355, it now appeals as a more mechanical, raw-feeling Ferrari from a transitional period.

Good cars are far better than the old reputation suggests; neglected cars are expensive to rescue.

It is the final junior Ferrari developed during Enzo Ferrari's lifetime and one of the last truly analogue mid-engined V8 models.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Ferrari 348, the strongest cars have a continuous ownership file, matching chassis and engine details where applicable, original manuals, invoices and evidence that major service work has been carried out by recognised specialists. Late specification, Rosso/tan or rare colours, low owners, Classiche and continuous servicing matter.

Mechanical inspection priorities

Major belt service is engine-out; check timing, clutch, gearbox and cooling carefully. A proper pre-purchase inspection should include cold start behaviour, leak-down or compression testing where appropriate, diagnostic scans on modern cars, underbody photography, suspension pick-up point checks, brake condition and a road test long enough to reveal heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance is usually more expensive than buying the better car.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist who knows the model's factory seams. Collector value is heavily affected by structural repairs, poor paintwork, corrosion, incorrect panels and missing factory trim. Cosmetic restoration can be acceptable when documented; hidden accident repair should be priced severely.

Specification strategy

Late GTB/GTS and Spider cars with sorted suspension and documented belt services are the best route. Specification, colour, transmission and limited-production variants can move values dramatically. Buy the best-documented car in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will require years of corrective work.

Service interval
12 months; mileage interval varies by model and use
Annual running cost
$3,500 – $10,000
Fuel economy

Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photographs and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location and declared value.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres date out, batteries fail and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

A Ferrari specialist should inspect engine-out service quality, gearbox synchros and chassis condition. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific trim, suspension, electronics and engine components. A cheap car waiting on unobtainable parts is rarely cheap in collector-car ownership.

The 348 is no longer simply the cheap Ferrari. The best late cars are being reassessed, while ordinary cars remain highly sensitive to service history.

Long-term outlook

EmergingHorizon: 5–10 years

The 348 offers analogue Ferrari character at a still-rational entry point. The best late cars should continue to improve as the model's reputation normalises.
