Ferrari 625 TF

Ferrari's first four-cylinder sports racer — three cars, and chassis histories tangled with the 735 S.

Overview

Why this car matters

The 625 TF was Ferrari's first four-cylinder sports racer: three cars built in 1953, using the 2,498cc Lampredi four derived from the 625 F1, producing approximately 220 hp. Mike Hawthorn drove one to fourth at Monza in June 1953.

The chassis histories of the three cars are entangled with the Ferrari 735 S — engines were swapped between 625 and 735 spec in period, and one car was fire-damaged and rebuilt as a Ferrari 500 Mondial. This guide should be read alongside the Ferrari 735 S and Ferrari 500 Mondial guides.

Ferrari's first four-cylinder sports racer, and — together with the Ferrari 735 S — the origin of the Lampredi-four sports-racing line that led to the 750 Monza. Three-car production and cross-marque-specialist-contested chassis histories dominate.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis identity, engine identity and every period record before pricing. For the 625 TF specifically, verify chassis identity against Ferrari Classiche and independent specialist research — the three-car production run is entangled with the Ferrari 735 S (period engine swaps) and the Ferrari 500 Mondial (one car fire-damaged and rebuilt as a Mondial).

Chassis-history entanglement

Chassis histories across the 625 TF, 735 S and 500 Mondial are contested between specialist sources — engines were swapped in period, and one 625 TF was fire-damaged and rebuilt as a 500 Mondial. Reject any car whose current identity cannot be reconciled to the Ferrari Classiche file and independent specialist research.

Period-race record and originality

Any period competition record is a material value driver. Confirm the ownership record, matching identity of engine and chassis, and any period entry, result and photograph against the Ferrari Classiche archive and independent race-history research.

Historic-race preparation and current condition

Restoration and preparation standard is decisive. Confirm the extent of any body, mechanical and driveline work, the race-shop-competence of the preparer, and the current mechanical condition against a documented preparer's report.

Historic-race preparation

These are competition cars and belong with a preparer competent in period four-cylinder Lampredi engines and driveline hardware. Documented restoration and historic-race history by an appropriate specialist is a material value driver.

Long-term outlook

Strong HoldHorizon: 10+ years

Ferrari's first four-cylinder sports racer, three cars, with a Hawthorn debut result and chassis histories tangled with the Ferrari 735 S and Ferrari 500 Mondial. Chassis identity, period-race record and coachbuilder attribution separate the strongest cars.
