Overview

Why this car matters

The 342 America is the luxury GT that bridges the Ferrari 340 (America, Mexico & MM) and the Ferrari 375 (America, MM & Plus). Six were built: one Vignale cabriolet, two Pinin Farina cabriolets and three Pinin Farina coupés.

The 342 was the first Ferrari fitted with an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox; one example was owned by King Leopold III of Belgium.

A short, coachbuilt bridge between the 340 family and the Ferrari 375 America — six cars, luxury GT specification and the first Ferrari all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox. Coachbuilder attribution and provenance dominate.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis and engine identity, coachbuilder attribution and every body- and engine-specific record before pricing. For the 342 America specifically, verify body number against the six-car production record, coachbuilder attribution (Vignale or Pinin Farina) and — on the final chassis — any 4.5-litre engine upgrade against the Ferrari Classiche file.

Coachbuilder attribution and body-specific documentation

These early Lampredi Ferraris were bodied individually. Confirm the specific coachbuilder against Ferrari Classiche's records and period photography, and reject any car whose bodywork attribution cannot be documented.

Restoration history and originality

Restoration standard is decisive. Confirm the extent of any body, trim or mechanical restoration, the coachbuilder- and race-shop-competence of the shop that carried it out, and the originality of engine, gearbox and driveline against Ferrari Classiche's records.

Ownership continuity and provenance

Ownership continuity is a material value driver. Confirm the ownership record, matching identity of engine and chassis, and any period competition or concours record against the Ferrari Classiche archive.

What to pay

Private-sale market
With six cars built, the 342 America almost never reaches public auction; value evidence comes from private sales and the adjacent Ferrari 340 and Ferrari 375 America markets.

Agreed-value classic-Ferrari policy with limited mileage and secure storage. Early Lampredi-engined Ferraris sit in the highest specialist tier of classic-Ferrari underwriting; chassis identity, coachbuilder and any period-competition record are material factors.

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis and engine identity, coachbuilder attribution and every body- and engine-specific record before committing to a purchase — for these cars, chassis histories are frequently entangled and require file-level verification.

Coachbuilder- and race-shop-competent restoration

Body, trim and mechanical work must be carried out by shops competent in the specific coachbuilder's construction methods and, on the competition cars, in period race-engine and driveline practice. Documented restoration history by an appropriate specialist is a material value driver.
