Overview

Why this car matters

The 500 Mondial was Ferrari's first customer four-cylinder sports racer, named for Alberto Ascari's back-to-back Formula 1 world championships. The 1,985cc Lampredi four is a detuned version of the 500 F2 unit; race weight is around 720 kg.

The 500 Mondial debuted at the 12 Hours of Casablanca in December 1953, with Ascari and Villoresi finishing second. Series I cars were largely bodied by Pinin Farina; Series II by Scaglietti.

Ferrari's first customer four-cylinder sports racer and the earliest of Maranello's Lampredi-four line for private entrants. Chassis identity, series (I / II), coachbuilder — Pinin Farina or Scaglietti — and any period-competition record are decisive.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis identity, engine identity and every period record before pricing. For the 500 Mondial specifically, verify series (I or II) and coachbuilder — Pinin Farina or Scaglietti — against Ferrari Classiche, and confirm the car's chassis identity is not entangled with a former 625 TF (one 625 TF was fire-damaged and rebuilt as a 500 Mondial).

Chassis-history entanglement

Chassis histories across the 625 TF, 735 S and 500 Mondial are contested between specialist sources — engines were swapped in period, and one 625 TF was fire-damaged and rebuilt as a 500 Mondial. Reject any car whose current identity cannot be reconciled to the Ferrari Classiche file and independent specialist research.

Period-race record and originality

Any period competition record is a material value driver. Confirm the ownership record, matching identity of engine and chassis, and any period entry, result and photograph against the Ferrari Classiche archive and independent race-history research.

Historic-race preparation and current condition

Restoration and preparation standard is decisive. Confirm the extent of any body, mechanical and driveline work, the race-shop-competence of the preparer, and the current mechanical condition against a documented preparer's report.

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis identity, engine identity and every period record before committing to a purchase — engines were swapped between these cars in period, and chassis histories are entangled across the 625 TF, 735 S and 500 Mondial.

Historic-race preparation

These are competition cars and belong with a preparer competent in period four-cylinder Lampredi engines and driveline hardware. Documented restoration and historic-race history by an appropriate specialist is a material value driver.
