Overview

Why this car matters

The 735 S is the big-engined sibling of the Ferrari 625 TF: a 2,942cc Lampredi four. Alberto Ascari led its debut race at Monza in June 1953 before colliding with a 250 MM.

Bodies were by Autodromo, with one Pinin Farina and one Scaglietti example. The 735 S is the direct ancestor of the 750 Monza.

The big-engined sibling of the Ferrari 625 TF, with an Ascari-led debut at Monza and — as the direct ancestor of the 750 Monza — the pivot point of Ferrari's Lampredi-four sports-racing line. Chassis identity is entangled with the 625 TF and specialist-contested.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Ferrari Classiche and chassis records

Any purchase should begin at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello. Confirm chassis identity, engine identity and every period record before pricing. For the 735 S specifically, verify chassis identity against Ferrari Classiche and independent specialist research — production is effectively 1–3 depending on how the Ferrari 625 TF engine-swap cars are counted, and body attribution (Autodromo, Pinin Farina or Scaglietti) is a per-car question.

Chassis-history entanglement

Chassis histories across the 625 TF, 735 S and 500 Mondial are contested between specialist sources — engines were swapped in period, and one 625 TF was fire-damaged and rebuilt as a 500 Mondial. Reject any car whose current identity cannot be reconciled to the Ferrari Classiche file and independent specialist research.

Period-race record and originality

Any period competition record is a material value driver. Confirm the ownership record, matching identity of engine and chassis, and any period entry, result and photograph against the Ferrari Classiche archive and independent race-history research.

Historic-race preparation and current condition

Restoration and preparation standard is decisive. Confirm the extent of any body, mechanical and driveline work, the race-shop-competence of the preparer, and the current mechanical condition against a documented preparer's report.
