Overview

Why this car matters

Launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the 812 Superfast replaced the F12 Berlinetta with a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 producing 789 hp at 8,500 rpm. The model added rear-wheel steering and revised aerodynamics, and was joined by the open 812 GTS and the limited-series 812 Competizione and Competizione A.

It is the last naturally-aspirated V12 in Ferrari's mainstream line, succeeded by the V12-derived 12Cilindri.

Last mainstream naturally-aspirated V12 grand tourer in Ferrari's series production; sits between collector-V12 history and the hybrid era.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for

Provenance and originality

Start with identity, paperwork and originality. For the Ferrari 812 Superfast / Competizione, the strongest cars have continuous ownership history, matching numbers where applicable, original books and tools, factory build documentation and evidence of work by manufacturer-approved specialists. Original colour, documented Ferrari dealer service, limited-series allocation paperwork and unmodified specification.

Mechanical inspection priorities

The F140 GA V12 is robust; battery health (long-stored cars), F1-transmission clutch wear and cam-belt service are the practical concerns. A proper pre-purchase inspection includes cold-start behaviour, ECU diagnostics and fault-code history (where applicable), leak-down or compression testing, underbody photography, suspension and chassis inspection, brake condition and a long enough road test to expose heat-related faults. Deferred maintenance on a car of this class is almost always more expensive than buying a better-sorted example.

Body, paint and accident history

Use a paint-depth gauge, lift access and a specialist familiar with the model's factory panel gaps and finish standards. Collector value is dramatically affected by structural repairs, refinished panels, poor paintwork and missing factory trim or option content. Documented cosmetic refresh is acceptable; concealed accident or fire damage must be priced severely.

Specification strategy

812 Competizione and Competizione A are immediate collector cars. Standard Superfast and GTS are usable modern V12s with measured upside. Specification, colour, options and limited-build variants move values significantly. Buy the best-documented example in the most desirable specification you can justify, rather than a tired example of a rarer derivative that will need years of corrective work.

Annual running cost
$6,000 – $20,000
Fuel economy

Insurance
Use an agreed-value collector or specialist supercar policy with limited mileage, secure storage, documented photography and an annual value review. Premiums vary sharply by age, storage location, declared value and driver profile.

Maintenance planning

Budget annually even if the car is used sparingly. Fluids age, tyres and date-coded rubber components must be replaced regardless of mileage, and stored cars need exercise. A documented maintenance rhythm protects both reliability and resale value.

Parts and specialist access

Ferrari main-dealer servicing is straightforward to source globally; warranty extensions add resale support. Before purchase, confirm parts availability for model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine components. A discounted car waiting on unobtainable parts or a factory service slot is rarely a saving in collector ownership.

Standard 812 Superfast values softened in 2023 as new-car prices were absorbed and then firmed as the model closed production. Competizione and Competizione A are blue-chip in modern V12 collecting.
